Hjem
Midden, habitable land in between Mørkogis and Lysogild

Hjem

The planet is tidally locked to a binary star system (Blålys & Rødlys). Only a small band around the equator is habitable. When in the sky, Blålys casts a blue light upon all of Midden. When in the sky, Rødlys casts a red light upon all of Midden. Hjem has one moon, Skygge (shadow).

Lysogild
Land of Light & Fire.

Mørkogis
Land of Darkness & Ice.

Midden
The Middle, inhabited by the Mennesker and many other races and beasts.

Calendar

Only the Midden has seasons. Since Hjem is tidally locked in its orbit with the binary stars, Blålys & Rødlys, it suffers long periods of light and long periods of darkness. Those that live in the Midden record the passage of time by the alignment of Blålys & Rødlys with the moon, Skygge.

Measures of Time

  • Syklus = 25 Tid of Blålys & Rødlys; 146 Uke of Skygge (at which they align on opposite horizons, ~6 years).
    • Skygge is in the shadow of Hjem and can only be seen atop the highest peaks in Midden.
  • Tid = A full cycle of the binary suns. (~65 days)
    • Blålystid = Time of Blue Light. Blålys is high in the horizon (~26 days).
    • Kveldtid = Blålys & Rødlys are both near the horizon, covering Midden in deep violet shadows (~13 days).
    • Rødlystid = Time of Red Light. Rødlys is high in the horizon (~26 days).
  • Uke = The cycle of the moon, Skygge (~14 days).
    • Voskuke = New to Full
    • Avtuke = Full to New
  • Deluke (“Del” for short) = ⅛ of a Uke. (~1.8 days)
    • The time in between New to Quarter to Half to Three-Quarters to Full, etc.

The most ancient Mennesker have lived for 15 or more Syklus.

Races of Midden

Mennesker
Humans, viking culture - minus the boats.

Ojru
A massive race. They are dark-haired and have toothless mouths. They are well-known for their sculptures.

Hulemenn
A race of vole-people. They are famous for their seminaries. They practice ritual cannibalism of the deceased.

Seksøyne
A graceful race. They are yellow-haired and have six eyes. They naturally hibernate. They are famous for their shrines. They are the descendants of gods.

Skyggemenn
A delicate-looking race. They are black-skinned and have large mouths. When they die, they actually turn into another kind of creature that burrows into the ground. No one knows what they become. They have excellent hearing. In their culture, cryptography is a highly prized ability. They are a magical mutation of Mennesker.

Skapning
A tiny race. They have bony plates instead of hair. Their sense of smell is incredibly powerful. They are exceptionally good at alchemy.

Mandoler
Half-mennesker. They show little emotion and pride themselves in rational thought. They have no country of their own, but work for other races.

Beasts of Hjem

Wyrm

Lysogild Wyrm Lysogild Wyrm

Few creatures are more fearsome than the great wyrm of the barren desert.

Lysogild Wyrmlings

While much smaller in relation to the adult wyrm, they equal the size of a man. Wyrmlings’ wings are fully functioning after only 1 syklus from birth and are not lost until they hatch from their cocoon safe atop a rocky outcropping.

Mørkogis Wyrm Mørkogis Wyrm

Like its cousin, this creature is just as fearsome and can be the deep icelands.

Mørkogis Wyrmlings

Mørkogis wyrmlings do not grow wings, but instead emit intense heat from a very young age as they carve out ice tunnels beneath the surface. Unsuspecting travelers can find themselves on loose footing and crashing into melted ice into the tunnels below.

Jötnar

Edel
Edel

The Edel are an ancient tribe of noble giants that once ruled the Midden. Their numbers have dwindled and now they mostly dwell in highly fortified places far from the Mennesker. Some come down from their fortifications from time to time.

Trær Trær

An ancient tribe of giants that broke off from the Edel and sought solace in the wildest places of the Midden and it is rumored that they went off into the deep Lysogild and Mørkogis.

Troll
Trolls

Trolls come in all shapes and sizes, but mostly stupid and not too picky about what they’d eat. Trolls hate the light, but some have been known to tolerate red or blue light. Descended from the wildest, cruelest, and deranged Edel, Trær, and other races of Hjem.
