Main: Thread of Darkness

Even though the technological levels of the species of Known-Space are advanced enough to have computers capable of translating all known languages, these technologies have not been made efficient enough for small enough to make convenient personal "universal translators". The cost in development and distribution of these devices has been determined to be unnecessary, especially since most are able to learn new languages more efficiently.

However, there are two common/standard languages that have formed over time which provide a good means of permitting individuals of multiple species to communicate without the need of learning each separate language.

Republic Paragon

This is a standardized language established for Republic citizens heavily involved in well educated or technical communication: politics, science, etc. Few outside those of Republic authority are well versed in this language.

Galactic Trade Speak

This is a mish-mash of words from multiple species and basic sentence structures used for the simple communication of merchants and businessmen. This is the most basic means for cross communication between all the species of Known-Space, however due to it's rough nature, there is always a risk of misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

Unless one learns everyone's languages, there are going to be times when one either doesn't understand what someone is saying at all or only catch a couple of words common to Galactic Trade Speak.

Species Languages

Nihod Chet

Neither a Nihod or a Chet is capable of auditory communication. The Nihod pod is equipped with electronics that communicate by radio frequency. The device interacts bio-chemically with the receptors of the Nihod, which it then perceives as communication. Dealings with other species has required them to develop peripheral devices (like CB-radio) to open communication. These are always tied to specific frequencies, so a Nihod Chet could be communicating silently to other Nihod Chet in addition to open communication with others.

Oncama

The Oncama language has a very simple structure, lacking many of the conjunctions, adjectives and adverbs common in many other languages. When listed too by someone who does not know the language, a conversation sounds like a cat-fight of hisses, yowls and spitting.

Turuk

The Turuk do have a natural, auditory language (which sounds rather like a string of "raspberries") that they use for their basic, day-to-day communications. They communicate telepathically primarily for long, detailed or very technical discussions. Any Turuk who has dealings with other species will have a small device installed which the Turuk telepathically interfaces with to speak in Republic Paragon and/or Galactic Trade Speak.
