Description

Abilities

Sword of Genoth [?]
Ring of Rimen [?]
The sword has a large red garnet in the pommel and is crafted of a metal he is unfamiliar which has a rosy tint. The ring was crafted of the purest platinum and holds a rare gem like a white tiger's eye. Both were stylized with the likeness of a owl and have inscriptions of a flowing script of an unknown language. Sword of Genoth
  • When within close proximity to goblins or orcs, the blade hums as if powered by an inner energy and an ember of light glows dimly from the pommel stone. Detect (goblin/orc, vague, PER 18) [4]
  • Goblins and orcs struck with the blade take an additional 2d burn (not flaming) damage. Innate Attack (burn, goblin/orcs only, followup) [4]
  • At night, when the moon of Genoth is in the sky, the blade becomes especially keen, adding 1d (3) cut damage. Innate Attack (cut, armor divisor, only on night of moon, followup) [5]
Ring of Rimen
  • While worn, the user's footfalls, and breath, become as gentle as a calm evening breeze, granting a +4 to Stealth when motionless and +2 when moving. Silence 2 [9]
  • At night, when the moon of Rirnen is in the sky, the user becomes invisible to goblins and orcs, dispelled only after striking a foe (melee). Invisibility (can carry objects: up to medium encum., vs. goblins/orcs only, only on night of moon) [8]
The Sapphire Horn of Penithor [22]
- When blown, the horn provides the subject with a +1 bonus to Leadership and all allies in an 8-yard-radius receive a +3 bonus to moral and Fright Checks (Fearlessness 4), lasting for 10 minutes. Limited to 7 times per day. In game terms, this is pretty powerful item because it can provide a buff to many people instead of just yourself.

Background

The following may or may not be entirely accurate.

Member of House Kelwyn

  • Eldest son of Zakar Kelwyn (patron of House Kelwyn in Ralmorhegg), grandson of Sir Jares Kelwyn of Mingralt
    • and the Lady Jasline, daughter of Sir Barrish Delwohr of Mingralt.
  • Born on the 12th of Hiadhul, 709, in Mingralt. He was eight years old when his family moved to the newly established Barony of Tregenhor in Rottithlas of 717.
  • At the insistence of his father, he began his combat training at an early age, became a page at age 8, a squire at age 15 and earned his knighthood at age 19, when he swore fealty to Baron Damon Tregenhor.
    • Commanded and instructed militiamen in combat.
    • Often assigned to patrol the road ways of central Tregenhor.
    • Occasionally accompanied the other knights on missions to purge an area of aggressive beasts and monsters threatening the hamlets.
  • In addition to his training for knighthood, his father also instructed him in the design and administration of the family business:
    • Overseeing peasants who grow and harvest the grapes of the Kelwyn vineyards.
    • Oversee the master vintners and the wine production operations.
    • Manage the storage and trade of the finished wines.

His Presumed Death

Elathain's journey into the wood

On the 4th of Faemal, 741, Sir Elathain, and a unit of militiamen, was tasked to investigate a problem in the forests to the south of the hamlet of Ravyne to the east of Ralmorhegg. There, they encountered a fearsome monster like none he had ever heard tales told of. The monster slaughtered the party, leaving only Elathain, mortally wounded. However, it was not his fate to die that day. A spirit of the woods took pity on him, moved him to a safe location, tended his wounds and nursed him back to health over several months. [continue]... Since then he hears the voices of the trees and has learned druidic powers.

Spirits of the Forest
Clover, Elathain's pixie nature-spirit-guide.

Occasionally, he would venture to the hamlet of Ravyn, to trade and learn what news he could, but he held no desire to return to his past life, not until he learned of the death of the baron. Elathain returned to Ralmorhegg during the New Year celebration, Dothual 749. At first he was reluctant to make himself known, unsure of the reaction he would get from those he had not seen in nearly eight years.

  • His former friends have noticed him change. He's perhaps more distant, awestruck at "what's out there", unconcerned of the conflicts of mankind.
  • Upon returning to Ralmorhegg, telling his tale, the other knights were glad of his safe return. Following his renewed oath of fealty to the new baron, he once again serves as a knight of the baron.
    • Probably, reluctantly serves Lord Dyron. Supports Sir Kyllan as a more benevolent leader. (Elathain suspects there are others of the nobility that share this same sentiment).
  • Recently, Elathain has been serving on the battle front at Thurdetch, ever watchful of the actions of the Straihlbalt forces.

In His Absence
During the eight years he was gone, presumed dead, there were some changes:

  • Lord Zakar Kelwyn has devoted much time to instructing his second son, Grag (38), in the family business, preparing him to take over as the family patron one day soon.
  • Lady Jasline, Elathain's mother, died of an illness in the winter three years ago, 24th of Munetla, 746.
  • Lady Mayra Hilkath (only daughter of Fellar Hilkath), who he was likely to wed, instead married Conin Farston (35).

Sword of Genoth & Ring of Rimen

Following his rescue by the spirits of the woods while in the forests southeast of the hamlet of Ravyne, before his return to Ralmorhegg, Elathain had many years to explore the forest. During one of his scouting quests, he stumbled across the ruins of an ancient stone building. The stone exterior appeared to have been carved with numerous, detailed designs, but untold ages of weathering had eroded them to a point which he could make no sense of them or clearly describe the carvings. Venturing into the structure, he found a substructure, accessed through a stone slab worn so thin that it nearly collapsed under his weight. In the chamber below, he discovered a moldering room housing a pristine chest, magically protected from the savages of nature. Inside, he discovered a sword and a ring. Although he has learned nothing yet of the artifact's history, through regular use he as learned some of their benefits.
